Butterfish is an AI-powered command-line companion that brings LLM assistance directly into your shell. Designed for bash and zsh, it lets you ask for help, generate commands, and troubleshoot issues without leaving the terminal. Think of it as a Copilot-like workflow for the command line: you describe what you want to do, and Butterfish responds with context-aware guidance or suggested commands based on what’s happening in your session.
After installing via Homebrew or go install, you launch an AI-enabled shell with butterfish shell. From there, you can trigger prompts naturally: start a command with a capital letter to ask the AI a question or request a command, and Butterfish will return suggestions you can adapt or run. It also supports Goal Mode, where you specify an objective (using !) and Butterfish helps plan and execute steps toward that goal. For scenarios that may involve riskier actions, !! enables Unsafe Goal Mode—useful when you explicitly want fewer guardrails.
Butterfish integrates with OpenAI and OpenAI-compatible APIs, and it’s built to be customizable: you can tune the prompts and behavior to match your workflow, whether you want concise command snippets, more explanation, or a stricter style for production environments. The result is a smoother terminal experience for software engineering tasks—faster iteration, fewer context switches, and a more approachable way to handle unfamiliar commands, errors, and automation. more
